Hello my name is Amy and I have been an Equine Assisted Services Intern at Ride for Joy over the past 8 weeks. This summer session has been so rewarding in many ways! I have enjoyed greatly getting to know the wonderful instructors, staff members, volunteers, and riders at Ride for Joy. During my time at Ride for Joy, my skills with children have increased significantly.
My greatest moment during this internship came at week 3. After 3 weeks of learning and connecting to a rider, I learned that she had not [ridden] outside in over a year. I made it my goal to help her overcome her fear and reassure her that we could go on a trail ride safely and successfully. At week 3, she bravely decided to go outside and watching her reclaim the outdoors after a past fall was amazing. This experience has been valuable to me by reinforcing the skills of patience, communication, and understanding.
It was so fun to do Tai Chi, stretches, and activities with the riders including All Abilities Camp. I am excited to continue to volunteer in the future when it is possible.
I am extremely grateful to Ride for Joy for giving me this opportunity to learn more about adaptive riding and how many benefits it brings to the rider.
Thank you for my amazing summer with Ride for Joy!
